Before You Ship

Preparing Your Placenta

Proper preparation ensures your placenta stays safely preserved from the moment of birth through delivery to our facility.

Step 1

Pack Your Essentials

Place both Ziploc bags, the chux pad, and the cooler into your hospital or birth center bag so they are ready to bring with you when you go into labor.

Step 2

Prepare Ice Packs

Soak the provided ice packs in cool water for approximately 3 minutes. After soaking, gently dry them with a paper towel or clean cloth to remove excess moisture. Freeze the ice packs until you are ready to pack and ship your placenta.

Step 3

Prepare the Placenta for Freezing

After birth, lay the placenta on the chux pad and use it to blot away any excess blood to help minimize leakage during transport. Place the placenta into one Ziploc bag, ensuring it lies flat and as much air as possible is removed. Then place the sealed bag into the second Ziploc bag to double-bag it.

Step 4

Pack the Cooler

Place the double-bagged placenta into the cooler and arrange ice packs both underneath and on top. Freezing the placenta together with the ice packs ensures everything fits properly and molds into place, making packing and shipping easier later. Leave the cooler in the freezer for at least 24 hours with the placenta and ice packs inside.

Step 5

Timing Is Important

The placenta should be placed on ice within 2 hours of birth. It may remain on ice for up to 4 hours before being moved to a refrigerator. The placenta can stay refrigerated for up to 3 days before it must be transferred to the freezer.

Time to Send

Ready to Ship

Follow these steps carefully to ensure your package arrives safely and on time.

Step 1

Choose the Right Day & Time

To ensure timely overnight delivery, ship your package only on Monday or Tuesday mornings. Earlier in the day is preferable to avoid missing the carrier’s cutoff.

Step 2

Seal & Pack Your Shipment

Close the cooler securely and tape it shut. Place the cooler inside the provided shipping box—please use the same box that your cooler was originally shipped in. Tape the box closed and attach the shipping label to the outside.

Step 3

Place Your Backup Label

Two shipping labels are included with your kit. One is for you to send the package to us, and the second is a backup—place it just inside the box on top of the cooler in case the exterior label is damaged during transit.

Step 4

Drop Off at UPS

Drop the box off at a local UPS store. Confirm that Next Day Air shipments for the day have not yet been picked up. If dropping off after 10 AM, it is recommended to call ahead and verify that overnight shipments are still being accepted.

Step 5

Notify Us

Once your package has been shipped, please email us to let us know it is on its way so we can be prepared to receive it.

Step 6

Processing & Return

As soon as your package arrives, we will notify you. Your placenta will be processed within 48 hours of receipt, and your completed package will be shipped back to you.
